Ratkottavia tapauksia ei tyydytä vain seuraamaan sivusta ja etsimään ennalta määritettyjä ratkaisumalleja, vaan pelaaja pääsee vapaasti rakentamaan ratkaisumalleja ja keskittymään kunkin rikostapauksen mysteereitä omalla tavallaan.

Crimes & Punishments kattaa peräti kahdeksan kiehtovaa tapausta, murhista katoamisiin ja varkauksiin, jotka saavat pelaajan hoksottimet eloon aivan uudella tavalla. Pelin esittelemät tapaukset perustuvat etsivähahmon luojan, Arthur Conan Doylen romaaneihin ja näiden tapausten autenttisuus myös tuntuu ja näkyy pelimaailmassa monin eri tavoin.

Pelaajan tekemillä päätöksillä on myös realistiset vaikutuksensa, joskus yllättäviä sellaisia ja nämä puolestaan vaikuttavat lopputulokseen monin eri tavoin.
